Workpackage 4 (WP 4)
Objectives
To
generate information/knowledge about the role (prevalence, necessity
and significance) of economic relationships and communication
in selected EU food chains by analysing the data obtained from
the representative cross-country, multi-commodity survey of farmers,
processors and retailers. In addition, to identify the economic,
social and cultural factors which influence relationships and
communication within these chains.
Description of work
In
WP4, the data obtained from the survey(s) will be analysed, using
a wide range of statistical, in particular multivariate, techniques.
One primary objective is the generation of statistical significant
estimators for population parameters. Another objective is to
test hypotheses where these have been generated as a result of
WP1 and/or WP2 and included in the survey. Potential statistical
techniques to be used may include multiple analysis of variance
(MANOVA) using three types of factors (country, commodity, chain
actors), and/or a combination of factor, cluster and discriminant
analysis. Regression analysis may also be applied where feasible.
The overall dataset should contain sufficient variation so that
it would be possible to identify statistically significant differences
in the role of relationships and communication across countries,
commodities/product and between chain actors (farmers, processors,
retailers). Similarly, it will be possible to quantify the importance
of factors influencing relationships and communication and to
distinguish between country-specific, commodity-specific and chain
actor-specific factors.
While
the full dataset will be analysed by one team in order to generate
general, cross-country results and conclusions, each country team
will also analyse its own data in order to investigate country-specific
issues in more detail.
From
the results of this analysis it will be possible to identify important
issues with regard to relationships and communication which merit
deeper, country-specific research.
Deliverables
Report 4, (D5),
one section per country and one comparative section, will contain
the first key findings of the FOODCOMM project.
As
soon as these results are available, their dissemination will
start by making them available to survey participants and the
consultation panel.
